What is the Big Event?

The Big Event’s motto is “One Big Day. One Big Thanks.” It is the largest student-run community service effort at the University of South Carolina. For the third year, students and alumni will come together to complete a variety of projects throughout the Columbia area.

Projects are completed regardless of need or socioeconomic status; instead, it is The Big Event’s goal to simply say, “Thank you.” This year we expect to have over 100 projects completed by hundreds of volunteers.

How do I sign up?

Online project request can be found here: https://www.uofscbigevent.org/

What qualifies as a worksite?

Past projects have included nonprofit organizations, schools, churches, and residential homes. If you do not fall under one of these categories, you are more than welcome to submit a request, and TBE staff will respond with a decision following a project check. Typical projects are located within a 20 minute drive from the University of South Carolina campus.

What do I need to provide for volunteers?

Residents and community members are responsible for providing all supplies and tools for your project. Volunteers may bring their own gloves.

What kind of work can volunteers do/not do?

Volunteers are able to do a range of tasks. Common projects include yardwork, painting, cleaning, lifting, and organization. Power tools are off limits for volunteers.

Do I need to be home while the volunteers are working?

Yes, the resident must be home when the volunteers arrive and for the full time that the project is being completed. If you are not home, we cannot complete the project.

How many volunteers should I request?

A minimum of four volunteers will be sent to each project. There is no limit to how many volunteers you can request, but we can not guarantee that the full amount can be sent.

What is a project check?

This will be scheduled at your convenience. Two of our team members will be responsible for meeting  at the project’s site. It lets us confirm that the project is feasible and safe to do within four hours. Our team will also make sure that we have an accurate number of volunteers assigned to the project and answer any questions that you may have.

Is there a rain date for The Big Event?

No; this is a rain or shine event.
